For the uninitiated, Reddit is a community equal parts news/memes/pictures/humor/everything gathered under the banner of discussion. It’s far more complex than Facebook and not quite the theater of the absurd that is 4chan. Imagine the BBS services of days gone by–a variety of communities each with their own identifiable traits and culture.
If you haven’t already joined you’ll at least want to make a cursory visit and then promptly set to burning your Facebook and Twitter.
Before or after that point be sure to join r/Detroit. A burgeoning community, r/Detroit is featuring some great discussions on Detroit issues, events, and bands. It’s not the place to plug whatever lame shit you are currently doing, but it is a great place to discuss all the lame shit you are currently doing.

Dwark
My mind was blown the other day when I found out that LMFAO are the respective son and grandson of Detroit native and Motown Records founder Berry Gordy. (Thanks to the powers of Wikipedia, I also found out that the gorgeous Spanish-tile-roofed house in Boston Edison I had always admired happens to be the former home of Mr. Gordy.) Makes sense though that music runs in the family.
LMFAO happens to be coming to Detroit this May as part of the Redfoo and Cherrytree Present: Sorry for Party Rocking Tour Featuring LMFAO and the Party Rock Crew and Special Guests Far East Movement, The Quest Crew, Sidney Samson, Eva Simons and Natalia Kills and Motor City Rocks is pleased to be giving away one (1) pair of two (2) tickets to see it. The show happens May 23 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
To enter to win the pair of tickets, comment on this post here or on our Facebook page with what Motown song you’d like to see LMFAO cover. Winner will be picked at random and notified on April 2.
Find the full listing of the Sorry for Party Rocking Tour dates, as well as ticket information, here.
U.S. residents only. Tickets will be reserved at will call and must be picked up at least 2 hours prior to the show.
40 Stitches Later – Rust Belt Never Sleeps
40 Stitches Later, an Americana/Alt-Country outfit from Lansing, offer up some good North-Midwestern twang against a bleak setting of unemployment and everyday blue collar struggles on their new CD Rust Belt Never Sleeps. The title of the record is a nod that’s setting the bar a bit high, fellas, but the images behind it seem appropriate. The characters and stories are dark, but it’s not always sunshine and smiles in the 21st century Rust Belt.
At times reminiscent of The Flying Burrito Brothers, like on the opening track “Ballad of Blackman Township” and at others channeling Bottle Rockets (“Unemployment Blues”), 40SL have embraced some strong influences. They’re strongest material is delivered in minor keys and slower tempos. Those tracks (“Parkersbug, WV”,”Die Tool Maker” for example) seem to flow with a bit more authenticity, provoking images of the slow-moving days and biting winds of rural Michigan Winters. The more upbeat material has its moments too – “Vacant Lot” is catchy with its Tom Petty cadence verses and octave guitar vamps, and the title track ironically invokes Mr. Young himself.
The dying art of making a record might be rare in this age of iTunes and YouTube, but Rust Belt Never Sleeps is a balanced collection of well written songs that are more like chapters in a book than individual stories. You’ll enjoy the transition from one to the next, even when the lyrics of some hit a bit close to home. We all know someone – or might be someone – who has lost their job at the factory, has a bit too much to drink sometimes, or ought to try to spend a bit less time at the black jack table. This is life in the 21st century Rust Belt.
You should go see the K-Holes from out of NYC tonight. They are pretty sweet and on everyone’s favorite label, HoZac Records. It’s not like you have anything else to do on a Tuesday! Also performing is Turn To Crime and Bezoar.
