MOTOR CITY MUSIC CONFERENCE
Motor City Rocks Showcase
THURSDAY NIGHT

Desolation Angels kick off the MCR Showcases

Thursday’s MCR Showcase kicked off a very successful three days of rock at the 313.Jac.  Desolation Angels gave the night a rollicking start, knocking around excitable songs that blended traces of blues and rockabilly with straight rock and country.  Timothy Monger (accompanied by a light-up birdhouse) followed with a blissful set of solo acoustic pop stuff, proving that his songs sound just as good arranged sparsely as they do amongst the lush din of Great Lakes Myth Society.

John and Shawn's panel (How to Make Your Band Successful: The New Grenada Way)The night’s completely unexpected highlight came with New Grenada’s ‘performance,’ which began with a hilariously accurate panel seminar describing how to make a rock band successful the “Team Grenada” way.  After handing out information pamphlets to the assembled audience, Team Grenada panel Shawn and John described/poked fun at everything from band names (no more ‘the’ bands) and record producers (get someone people have heard of to record your record) to using props to enhance your stage presence (a fencing helmet and keytar were used as in-person examples).  While the panel elicited multiple reactions amongst the crowd (laughter, confusion, aggravation), New Grenada’s set saw the band scorch out four punkish, frenzied pop songs that left a strong impression on the entire audience.

By the time The Prime Ministers had taken the stage, sports hero Kirk Gibson was mingling a bit at the bar – which, of course, led a small group of the audience to mimic Gibby’s 1984 World Series double-fist pump.  Ex-baseball stars aside, the Ministers laid down a smooth set of pop rock made up mostly of songs from the band’s Go for Glory release. After Wednesday night’s extremely late pre-party with Kid Rock and friends, most members of the MCR crew were hanging their heads a bit at the end of the night.  Even so, Lansing band The Fuzz closed out the night with a fiery set of organ-laced rock that had heads bobbing around the bar.  Unfortunately, the band left its trademark gnome stage decorations back in the state capitol (a blemish somewhat magnified by Team Grenada’s previous mention of the importance of stage props).
