Hey everyone,

As you may know, Odd Hours is looking for a new permanent drummer BUT for now, we are asking our friends for a TEMPORARY replacement to fill a couple of live shows and a studio video shoot at a TV station. BTW, we added a bassist (which I am super excited about).

You would need your own drums and be able to learn the songs by March. Let me know if anyone knows someone or if you are interested. Btw, we practice once a week in Lake Orion but if you are quick with learning them, we probably wouldn’t have to meet every week. The dates below are the events we would love to keep in our schedule.

5pm Tuesday, March 12th- CmnTV Studio shoot (live performance)

I’m Greg. I sing and play bass in Ferndale/Oak Park’s rock three-piece Superbomb. We write music on the atmospheric, grungy, shoegaze end of the rock spectrum and I thought I’d share some of the records that inform what I personally bring to this band. A few of you have known me long enough to see some of these coming from a mile away, but here we go:

5. My Bloody Valentine – Loveless

The song “Sometimes” was famously used in “Lost in Translation” and it’s–for me, anyway–often the first track I skip to when I listen to this album. This album inspired a lot of ’90s rock, and I feel like it still sounds weird and unique. Kind of an easy go-to record for anyone claiming to have a little “shoegaze” in their sound, but it fits.

4. Ivy – Long Distance.

In which I reveal my feminine side. There’s that whole spectrum of female-fronted alt-pop that I’m a big fan of–Stereolab, Frou Frou, Emiliana Torrini, that stuff–but there’s something about this record in particular I’ve always connected to. It’s one of those “came out at a particular time in my life” deals. There’s a breezy wistful quality to the whole record, and the singer’s French accent lends it a bit of mystery and charm. Saw these guys at the Stick in 2006 and they were great live. The song for this one is “Edge of the Ocean”, which got used all over the place on TV, movies and advertising.

First off, sorry about the VEVO link on this one. Wanted to share the actual MTV-era video that the band released for this song, “From Your Mouth”. Goofy, literal take on the song title is goofy. These guys were one of the many industrial bands that got signed in the wake of Nine Inch Nails breaking in the early ’90s, but I always thought the more overt Depeche Mode pop elements made them stand out from their more straight-ahead aggressive Ministry-aping contemporaries.

2. Sonic Youth – Dirty

I don’t think I really need to talk much about this record. Here’s Lee doing one of the ultimate Lee songs.

1. Failure – Fantastic Planet

The song I chose from this record is “Another Space Song”. The drum loop, pulsating chordal bass and perfectly-modulated guitar lead really sets the atmosphere of this gorgeous, mournful little number. If you’re into ’90s rock at all, just order a copy of this record. “Fantastic Planet” is massive. Every song sounds enormous, and it’s got one of the most epic closing tracks to any record I’ve ever heard. There are elements of Failure in every band I’ve ever played in (Superbomb, Dead Letters, Analog Lights).

Superbomb plays at the Lager House on Saturday, 1/19 with Grind Scheme, Eddie Logix & Doc Waffles, and The Hangers On, then at the New Dodge with Zombie Jesus & The Chocolate Sunshine Band on 2/8.

I have a really hard time getting into new music. Most of it kinda glances off of me, but every so often an album hits me really hard, and on that album there’s usually a point at which I get insanely jealous. I could go on and on about all the songs I wish I’d written, but seeing as it’s the dawn of a new year, I’ll just focus on 2012. So here are my top 5 songs I wish I’d written in 2012.
