Cloud Social receives Nobel Prize; perform free show at Lager House on Saturday
In a break from tradition, The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize for Physics to Detroit band Cloud Social. The announcement was made at a press conference early Friday afternoon.
“It’s surprising,” said Cloud Social bass player Jeremy Cybulski following the press conference, “Usually the prize committee announces recipients on the second Friday in October. Also, we’ve never done anything in the field of physics…ever.”
Each band member will receive a medal and diploma. The cash award, estimated at 8 million dollars, will be split amongst the 4 group members: Cybulski, Jonny Wilkins, Rod Jones, and Jim Faulkner.
“It’s a bold pick and perhaps the most controversial since O.J. Simpson in 1995,” said 2012 Physics prize winner David Wineland.
Wineland received the award for his groundbreaking work in experimental methods that allowed for the measurement and manipulation of individual quantum systems.
Cloud Social will perform at the Lager House on Saturday night. The show is free.
