Why You Should Stop Acting Like You Give A Shit

The fad that is social media has now begun to generate the fad that is “the social media movement”. It works like this: enough people come together, like something, and thus forever alter time and space with a simple movement of their index finger.

We all remember the Kony movement, which finally brought peace to Uganda and all of Africa. There was the great battle to get Betty White on Saturday Night Live—which improved everything for everyone everywhere.

Oh wait, none of that happened.

Social media is a fucking joke and this whole “post this” or “post that” is just what it is…posting something or not posting something. It creates the impression that you are doing something without actually doing anything of value.

The most recent “cause” to be taken up is Jon Stewart moderating a presidential debate.  I struggle most with the logic that would bring anyone to really care who moderates a presidential debate. It’s like caring who the umpire is at a Tee-Ball game.

Anyhow, here is the scenario I think some people envision:

Stewart comes out, takes his spot. Everyone cheers at the historic occasion. The candidates come out. They stand at their respective podiums. Then Stewart just starts hitting them with these totally awesome questions that run deep into the fabric of political governance. He’s like going no-holds-barred, man! And Obama and Romney are trying to be all like dodge-y but Stewarts all like: “No way, answer the question I asked!” American democracy is changed forever.

It is a ridiculous concept.

The political machines may allow Stewart to moderate because it would help with ratings but it would be under the condition that Stewart remains the obedient lapdog he’s always been. Don’t attach importance to Stewart beyond the fact that he is a comedian. He’s well informed and makes some occasional good points but above all he is in it for the money. He wants to continue making money. Not there is anything wrong with that, but touting him as some sort of savior is ludicrous.

Passive activism now rules the day.  Actually solving a problem takes hard work, determination, and potentially decades. To the deluded masses an example: saying you hate starvation and then telling your friends about how much it sucks is far different then starting a non-profit and trying to tackle the problem.

You don’t care—you’re just a pretentious prick who wants to seem compassionate.
