SOPA Sucks

I’m not aware if you know this, but members of congress are trying to push forward the most authoritarian pro-censorship bill ever. SOPA, Stop Online Piracy Act, gives the U.S. government the rightto take down any site that hosts copyrighted material on the behest of the movie industry. It doesn’t matter if the copyright infringement is the fault of the site’s administration, or just a user of the site. Now think, where have you seen copyrighted material before: Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, MotorCityRocks, everywhere.

As someone on Twitter pointed out, if you upload a Michael Jackson video to youtube, you could go to jail for 5 years. If you are the doctor responsible for killing Michael Jackson, you will go to jail for 4 years. See, that makes sense, right? Since I know I will be going to jail for my rampant piracy of Smiths albums, Degrassi Jr. High episodes, Robert Anton Wilson audio books, and pornographic pornography, I might as well upload this video of Pink Eye covering some Michael Jackson. That way I can take a huge chunk of Detroit rock folks to prison with me and they can teach me to play harmonica. (See you in prison Frank Woodman! Don’t drop the soap!)

SOPA was penned by a group of entertainment lawyers who got big $$ for trampling the internet. They don’t care that the founders of Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, eBay, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Zynga, AOL, Wikipedia, Tumblr, Foursquare, and MotorCityRocks all oppose the bill. It turns the commons of the internet into an Orwellian Thought Police piss parlor. They just want to sue you and toss you in jail for breaking copyright.

There’s no due process, whatsoever. Let’s say I don’t like your website. I could complain with a legitimate complaint about copyright abuse. Or, like Universal Media Group did, claim you’re infringing my copyright when you are not. Now, your website is down, offline, blocked by the government. Who do you call to get it reinstated, find out the facts as to what you’re being charged with? You don’t. There’s no appeals process. There’s no proof necessary, you just need to draft up a complaint. It’s kind of like the internet’s version of the Patriot Act! It’s not Orwellian, it’s Kafka-esque! Or is it Marxian? Regardless here’s a guide to working around the censorship
