The Glitch Mob made a well-hyped appearance at the Magic Stick Wednesday, August 3rd for an eager crowd.
Phantogram, from what I saw, had a very dense and ambient flare, suitable for the more ‘dubstep’ oriented crowd that attended, with also a real cool indy/shoegaze style with electronic aspects and interesting vocal filters. Here’s an act Deastro should totally get in contact with.
The twenty dollars people spared finally showed return once Glitch Mob took the stage. Everything opened well with a good buildup.Their stage-presence was great. Glowing blue sculptures brightened the group (It’s too bad I don’t have a photograph) with an almost Tron-like setup and each of the three members using their drum pads off and on proved powerful. Ratatat-sounding synths and recorded bass-guitar lines were prominent throughout. I managed to hear many styles of music within the set including glitch (of course), jungle, house, funk, and for the latter part, dubstep, which I didn’t really anticipate, but probably should have considering the magnitude of ‘party’ acts that are crossing over into that realm.
Even with the unexpected dubstep, everything was quite enjoyable while being accessible for a wide audience. As a side note, the crowd was a little obnoxious at times, with excessive shoving and shouting at inappropriate times (Phantogram had a slow bit that was difficult to hear over the voices), but all of this should be expected at this sort of show, so just suck it up and have fun.
