IN MEMORIAM: BLAIR
I’ll not say more than is necessary, as those who knew him better will doubtless have more of value to say. Detroit, everyone, lost someone special.
When I was sixteen I used to watch Sean Fitzgerald and Blair play / host open mics at Xhedo’s in Ferndale. This past Saturday Blair passed, joining Sean in the land of Gone Too Soon. Being able to see dynamic performers nightly electrified the tender synapses in my young mind. Blair in particular was a role model. He was a writer, poet, musician, playwright. He wasn’t a singular. As a performer (hell, as anybody) it can be difficult to speak out, to be radical, to have a social conscience – but you won’t be worth shit if you avoid those choices. This is the essential thing his work communicated to me.
His “Karma Police,” is the only coffee house cover I’ll keep when I’m gone. 4:05.
His memorial page can be found here. You can donate to his funeral costs, as well as a memorial fund. There’s something to start a fucking Kickstarter for.
