Album Review: Open the Blast Doors – Mazinga

mazinga blast Album Review: Open the Blast Doors Mazinga detroit concerts Mazinga’s Open The Blast Doors’ liner notes fold open to reveal pictures of comic books, outer space imagery, and Japanese kanji– obvious influences for a band named after an anime robot somethin’-or-other (you can catch a whiff of the influences just from titles like “Electric Eye” and “Thorium Orbiter 2008″). Beginning with the Ramones-ian bop on “Open The Blast Doors”, the five song EP offers more songs to the band’s geek-meets-buzz-saw punk catalog, but behind the shtick are some knockouts. Sometimes things get a little silly- as far as this reviewer can tell, song “5.47″ has a line that goes “I got a rock n’ roll license/ I got a list of demands [...] I got Taco Bell in my fucking hand!”. But “Blonde Zombies” mixes the ingredients well, combining ordinary rock n’ roll girl troubles with extraordinary sci-fi images over a swaggering riff.
