The Who Get Generous… And Forgetful?

August 23, 2008 by Lee in Detroit Concerts with 1 Comment

The Who will be donating all earnings from their upcoming Detroit area date to local charities Gleaners Food Bank and Focus: HOPE. Says singer Roger Daltrey on the band’s website, “The first gig we ever played in the U.S. was in Detroit and we have always had an affinity with this part of the country. Pete and I are very aware of the problems people are having in Michigan and feel we should give something back for all the support we have had over the last 40 years.”

(That’s all very cool, but The Who’s first U.S. dates were actually in New York. The first date on their first proper U.S. tour was in Michigan, but it was at Ann Arbor’s Fifth Dimension Club.)

Regardless, the concert is October 21 at The Palace.

Many decades ago, the song “I Can See For Miles” became a surprise hit in Detroit long before The Who became popular in the rest of the country. Roger might be thinking of that Detroit connection.
