Detroit Has Seen Better Days

Dammit. I miss Detroit. I miss the bands. I miss the venues. I miss all of my drinking buddies. I miss preparing for a week of a ‘black plague’ caliber illness directly after the Blowout. I’ve loved the city of Detroit since I spend my early elementary school years living on Deveraux Street, and even after moving to the suburbs, I’ve relished every chance I’ve had to get back to the city to watch the Lions get pummeled at Ford Field and to watch my beloved Detroit Tigers take the field at both Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park. I loved taking in shows in Detroit more than I did in any other surrounding neighborhood – music has always felt more authentic to me in The D than it did anywhere else..

Regardless of my emotional ties to the city, though, I still have to say that things like this make me unbelievably happy that I had the chance to move out to the Denver area. C’mon, guys – you’re closing the Detroit Zoo? I’m starting to think that ‘Kwame’ is old school latin for “incompetent,” while “Detroit City Council” (which USED to mean bad-ass funk rock, R.I.P.) currently stands for “inept lunkheads.”

(EDIT:)Yes, yes, I know that the City Council is not to blame for this particular incident. The true fact of the matter is this: while I’m very disappointed in the City Council’s decision from the point of view of someone who always loved his trips to the Zoo, I’m very excited and proud of the City Council members for having the balls to tell Detroit’s fine mayor that this is HIS fault for not bringing his extensive workplan to them sooner. Kudos to the City Council for telling Mayor Kwame that he needs to crawl of of his own hole this time. My ‘lunkhead’ observation is made based on the ‘legacy’ of the City Council during Kwame’s reign.

My heart aches for the city of Detroit and all of those still living amongst the Idiot Regime out there. Detroit’s a strong city, though – it will survive, I’m sure of it.
