Blowout Recap – Man, Inc.

Written by Loftus. Posted in Detroit Concerts

What is MAN? Take the filthy, nihilistic rage that defined Ministry, back when they were good. Cross it with gutter punk, richly cynical humor, and three or four veins popping out of your face, and you have MAN Inc’s “Blue Law Sunday”. “What the fuck am I supposed to be if I’m not supposed to BE WHAT I AM?!” – With his powerful set, MAN proved Thursday isn’t just a pit stop between Hamtramck Blowout’s opening ceremonies and its round of weekend shows. Any rocker will tell you: it sucks breaking a string. But it sucks even more when you’re the only guy on stage. When the fury of opener “Beer for Man” busted a string on his bass, MAN (real name: Matt McGuire) could only smile ruefully and ask the growing crowd inside Diesel to talk amongst themselves. Detroit’s best (read: angriest) one man band dutifully restrung his Fender, and before long was back in the center of the Hamtramck lounge’s circular stage, standing stock behind the mic stand with a wingtip on his drum pedal. “Schtick”, “Machine”, the red state favorite “Go Fuck Yourself” – MAN brought the pain proper, roaring like a frustrated sex panther and eliciting High Life salutes. But it wasn’t straight adulation driving those bottles to the sky. A MAN Inc crowd responds to McGuire’s willingness to scream out everything our little voices say all day. His songs are rabid, rhythmic anti-anthems that document tirelessly everything that’s shitty in the 21st century – work, the government, hippies, being alive – and he doesn’t offer hope beyond the next beer. Think it over, creep. – Johnny Loftus
