THE BLOWOUT’S GOT MCR IN A STRANGLEHOLD
lucashb detroit concerts MCR staffers are moving around mightly slowly this morning after mingling through the first official night of the MetroTimes Blowout. The opinion amongst Ryan, Matt and myself seems to be that last night’s Loretta Lucas set at Baker’s Streetcar is an early contender for this year’s ‘Best Blowout Performance,’ indeed. Seeing Lucas live is absolutely bewildering – she’s like a super-sweet amalgamation of Janis Joplin, Mary Lou Lord and Loretta Lynn, able to drop nuggets of soft folk, righteous country or simply contagious indie rock at any given point of a set. Her impressive voice ranged from delicate coos and hums to flat out hoedown wails, and she did it all with a sly smile on her face, raising her eyebrow occasionally with an expression that defied how amazingly easy she made her entire performance seem. Better yet, Loretta’s twin Julie matched her sister’s voice on the few songs she added vocals to … Man, oh man, this one’s gonna remain fresh in the MCR memory bank for quite some time. Enjoy the rest of the Blowout, kids – MCR’ll see everyone again with more complete Blowout recap coverage on Monday.
